Sistema de Cordoes

We use the Capoeira Federation's cordão system, which is used by most of the academies and groups in Brazil.  The colors of the cordoes are taken from the Brazilian flag.

Verde (Green) in the cordão represents the hope of all beginners to achieve a higher level of understanding of the game, it's philosophy and the spirit of the art.

Amarelo (Yellow) represents "gold", the happiness of having reached a richness of Capoeira vocabulary that provides a more satisfactory dialogue in the game.  Students with yellow cordoes know that, as in life, they need to keep aspiring to higher levels.  Their goal is the limit that is truly limitless.

Azul (Blue) represents the sky and is the highest level a student can achieve.  Like a bird soaring in the sky, students can explore all that Capoeira offers. They are breaking the rope that holds them to the Mestre and are getting ready to direct their own classes.

Branco (White) is the limitless limit and represents peace.  Now the mind is flexible and open to deal with all human beings.  It is the level where teaching and learning become balanced.  It is a time when one understands that there is no right or wrong, just differences in every Capoeirista; as there are in each individual in this world.

The student with the braided (trançado) cordão has to reflect and undate what was learned before and perfect it it.  The student can teach his or her own classes under the Mestre's supervision.

These mixed color cordoes might gradually decrease the color that represented the cordão.  The new color increases to indicate the progression within that level.  Note that the progression and advancement of these cordoes may happen in situations other than a batizado.

It takes at least 5 years to advance to each new level of the Mestre's cordão.  Dedication, philospophy, integrity and Capoeira community development are the criteria by which the Mestre will be evaluated by the Grand Mestre for their next promotion.
